Report summary
Early exploration in the basin focused on the Tertiary deepwater play. The 2001 Chinguetti discovery created initial excitement that was short lived due to performance issues at the field, leading to substantial reserves downgrades. In 2015, Kosmos Energy made the multi-tcf Tortue (formerly Ahmeyim) gas discovery in Mauritania. A further well in January 2016, proved up the extension of the Greater Tortue Complex south in to neighbouring Senegal. Also in 2015, Kosmos made a second large gas discovery with its Marsouin-1 exploration well. BP and Kosmos discovered the 10 tcf Orca field in 2019, confirming the continued potential of the basin. Following the oil price crash and coronavirus crisis in 2020, timing of further exploration in the basin is uncertain.
