The US EPA has proposed ambitious regulations to tighten emissions standards for light duty vehicles for model years 2027 – 2032. The EPA projects that this will require 67% of US light duty vehicle sales to be battery electric vehicles by 2032. If fully implemented, the regulations would dramatically alter the path of US vehicle electrification over the next 10 – 15 years. In this Insight slide deck, we address the following: • Downside impact on US gasoline demand and the number of refineries threatened by this legislation • Required EV battery installations and gigafactory requirements • Issue of whether infrastructure needs can be met within the US and its Free Trade Agreement partners • Likelihood of this proposal being achieved (if passed in its current form)
