As forecasts for US power demand are revised upwards, driven by planned additions of data centre capacity, constraints in the electricity supply chain have become critical. With AI capabilities advancing rapidly, the tech industry is focused on the near-term horizon of the next five years or so. Although manufacturers are adding capacity, there are still long lead times for key pieces of equipment such as gas turbines. There are limits to how far deliveries can be accelerated within that five-year timescale. More scheduled retirements of coal-fired plants are likely to be deferred, and more capacity will be added in renewables and battery storage. But it is still likely that many data centre developers will not be able to secure the power supply they want on the timetable they want.
