Wood Mackenzie has developed a new technique to estimate the current and future capacity value of Variable Renewable Energy sources (VREs) in each North America power market sub-region. The Net Peak Available Capacity Percentage (NPACP) assesses the ability of solar, onshore wind and offshore wind to produce power during critical "Net Demand" periods, such as the recently experienced California heatwaves. This insight presents selected NPACP results for different markets and also discusses the real-world implications of the California energy "crisis."
