Solar manufacturers are being forced to compete on technological breakthroughs rather than lower prices. The problem stems from N-type cells approaching their efficiency ceiling, with only 1.5% improvement left. Industry leaders are thus rushing toward perovskite-silicon tandem cells, which have already hit 34% efficiency in labs and are expected to scale commercially after 2028. At the same time, manufacturers face a critical issue: two decades of aggressive material optimisation – an 86% reduction in polysilicon use and a 150% increase in module power output – have led to higher mechanical failure rates. Protective components haven't evolved in parallel with thinner wafers and larger formats, creating a durability and reliability gap that threatens long-term module performance.
