Vietnam’s latest Power Development Plan 8: Fossil fuels dominate despite net-zero goals
Report summary
On 3 October 2021, Vietnam released the latest draft of its Power Development Plan 8 2021-2045. The plan is at the heart of driving the country’s decarbonisation efforts, following Vietnam’s 2050 net-zero pledge at COP26 in early November 2021. However, the latest power plan diverts from its 2050 net-zero pledge, as fossil fuel share of generation remains at 61%, nearly identical in 2045 to the 60% registered in 2020. How fast will coal and gas/LNG capacity grow under PDP8? Will solar and wind thrive in the latest plan?
