Air travel is forecast to continue to increase, reaching nearly three times 2015 levels by 2050. The improving fuel efficiency of new aircraft and gains in operational efficiency will play a major role in offsetting the rise in passenger numbers. Even so, aviation fuel use continues to rise, only reaching a plateau by the mid-2040s in our base case. This insight presents our base case outlook for aviation fuels out to 2050 and explores the role of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the decarbonisation of the aviation sector.
