Germany's hydrogen station network: a white elephant or the seed of a European FCV revolution?
Report summary
Germany is investing heavily in hydrogen mobility and the associated infrastructure. Together with other industry players, leading fuel companies were the buyers of this choice and established almost a hundred refuelling stations by the end of 2021. Although we anticipate that hydrogen will remain a niche product over our forecast period, it will take a prominent role in decarbonising the heavy trucking segment. Companies acting now would be able to build up the necessary infrastructure while European taxpayers bear the majority of the risks.
Table of contents
- Increased demand for hydrogen will depend on hydrogen trucks becoming cheaper
- Fuel retailers with forecourts at advantaged locations are well-positioned to meet demand
- Long term success depends on the rollout of a wider European network
