The continued growth in US crude production will present an opportunity for US refiners to maintain their advantage over the rest of the world. Canadian crude supply will also play an integral role in the future of North American refining. As gasoline demand stagnates and declines in developed economies (Europe, US, and Canada), North American refiners will look increasingly to distillate products to support margins with diesel and jet fuel demand expected to remain more resilient. Diesel export economics to key trade regions such as Latin America will be increasingly vital to refineries’ profitability. In this report, we provide a regional breakdown of key factors driving future North American refining economics.
