Austin Chalk tight oil unconventional play
Report summary
The Austin Chalk is an upper Cretaceous geologic formation that sits on top of the Eagle Ford. It was originally developed as a conventional play with shallow vertical wells targeting the Chalk’s extensive network of natural fractures. Operators now apply horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing to extract oil and gas. Sweet spots are highly productive, but lack predictability. The Austin Chalk is mature with limited resource upside, though individual wells can be highly economic.
