The Baxter Shale play is located in the Vermillion Basin, spanning the border between Colorado and Wyoming. The Vermillion is best described as a sub-basin of the Sand Wash Basin, which in turn forms part of the Greater Green River Basin. Elsewhere in the basin the formation is known as the Hilliard, Steel, or Mancos Shale.
