Chicontepec is a mature conventional play that has been operationally mismanaged. Costs have been too high, but that could change with the application of unconventional development techniques and an influx of new participants. PEMEX has had successful horizontal pilots and a wider-scale commercial breakthrough could occur if experienced tight oil operators start to control redevelopment and infill projects.
