While the Floyd and Neal shales are often referred to as discrete intervals within the Black Warrior Basin, the formations are in fact stratigraphically equivalent. Historically, industry has referred to the entire play as the Floyd Shale. However, nomenclature is shifting to the Neal, which refers to the deeper, more organic rich section of the shale.
