Asset Report
Gunnedah Basin CBM unconventional play
Report summary
With domestic gas supply shortfalls predicted in eastern Australia and strong gas prices driven by LNG netbacks, the Gunnedah Basin is an emerging CBM play in New South Wales, with the Santos-operated Narrabri Gas Project being the leading development in the play. There has been a strong opposition from environmental protection groups on CBM development. Santos released a detailed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in 2017. This EIS received 23,000 submissions. Santos has worked through these submissions and the EIS is now at the assessment stage. The Gunnedah Basin is stranded from the main domestic and industrial markets that are located 250 kilometres (155 miles) south of the basin. APA group has deferred the submission of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Western Slopes pipeline, until further assessment of the Narrabri Gas Project EIS.
