Report summary
The Lobo play extends across Webb and Zapata counties in south Texas and continues into Mexico. The Lobo is considered the core area of the larger Lower Wilcox formation that trends to the northeast along the Texas coastline. In spite of its complex geology and operational challenges, the Lobo enjoyed prominence as a productive gas play in the Gulf Coast basin before being overshadowed by the Eagle Ford in 2012. Most of the Lobo's nearly 3,000 wells are vertical. Some operators tested horizontal drilling beginning in 2008 but the practice never became widely used in the play. There has been almost no activity since 2012.
