The San Juan Gallup Sandstone is an interval within the wider Mancos Shale that is present throughout the San Juan Basin, and has produced oil from the conventional Hospah and Hospah South fields in McKinley County, New Mexico. The unconventional portion of the play lies just north of the intersection of San Juan, Rio Arriba, and Sandoval counties, New Mexico. Currently, the Gallup Sandstone is the only tight oil target in the San Juan Basin that has demonstrated commercial potential.
