The Viking formation of the Colorado Group is located in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Development is focused in Alberta and Saskatchewan, but the structure extends into parts of Montana and Wyoming. The Viking formation produces light sweet oil of 35-39 API. The Viking was a conventional target for over 60 years. Since 2008, tight portions of the play have been developed using horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing.
