The Agadem block is in the East Niger Rift Basin. Exploration started in the 1970s, but the two main oil fields - Goumeri and Agadi - were discovered in 1990 and 1994.In 2008, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) signed a production sharing contract (PSC) to develop the fields.
