The Al Furat Production Company (AFPC) is a joint venture (JV) between the Syrian Petroleum Company, Shell, CNPC and ONGC. The JV operated in the Deir Ez Zor region of Syria, close to the River Euphrates (Al Furat), bordering Iraq. It had five discrete areas with more than 30 mature oil fields of varying size. Oil production started in 1985, reaching a peak of 400,000 b/d in 1994. By 2010, prior to the conflict escalating, production declined to around 100,000 b/d. Following the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, we understand the fields are now controlled Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which produce oil from some of the fields at a reduced capacity.
