Alam El Shawish East fields are located in the Western Desert, southwest of Apache/Sinopec's Abu Gharadig field, which is now part of Khalda Merged Area. In 1996, Egyptian General Petroleum Company (EGPC) discovered the HG field but did not develop it due to its challenging economics.In 2004, Naftogaz of Ukraine acquired the block from EGPC in a bid round.
