The Alam El Shawish East area is situated in the Western Desert, between Shell's Alam El Shawish West block and Apache's prolific Abu Gharadig field. One discovery was made on the block, the HG field, in 1996 by the Egyptian General Petroleum Company (GPC). At the time however, the field was considered uneconomic.
