The Barzan gas project involves the phased development of a sector of the super-giant North Field to meet Qatar's rising domestic gas demand. It is a strategic asset for Qatar and its local economy as it supplies natural gas to power utilities and ethane to local industries. In February 2007, QatarEnergy and ExxonMobil agreed on the initial development phase and signed a Heads of Agreement (HoA) for future phases.
