Block CI-40 contains the deepwater Baobab field, discovered by Canadian Natural Resources (CNR) in 2001. The field is located 60 kilometre southwest of Abidjan. Baobab is the only deepwater development in Cote d'Ivoire.Development started in 2003 and first oil was in 2005. Oil production was expected to peak at 65,000 b/d in 2006, but due to the failure of sand screens in four of the ten producing wells, it only averaged 33,000 b/d.In 2008, CNR launched a second phase. This involved well workovers, as well as modifications to the floating production storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) to improve its sand-handling capabilities.Gas production started in 2005 but only small volumes are sold to the domestic power sector.
