Oil sands achieved its second ever highest quarter of production with in situ hitting a new record. Pricing was down marginally from Q2 but still high enough to generate near record earnings. The four leading oil sands producers bought back a collective $6.7 billion in shares in Q3 and paid out C$2.8 billion in dividends. M&A has returned in 2H 2026. Greenfire announced the C$1.3 billion Connacher deal in July. In October, Cenovus announced a C$5.7-billion corporate acquisition of Athabasca Oil Corporation. This follows Cenovus' C$9.3 billion deal for MEG Energy last year. Not only are companies delivering on shareholder returns, they are making large scale bets to gain producing projects and quality undeveloped leases. We highlight the pricing, production, operating cost and corporate trends across the oil sands sector.
