The East Baghdad South field forms the southern segment of the larger East Baghdad oilfield and lies approximately 70 kilometres northwest of the Ahdab oilfield. Spanning 60 kilometres in length and 12 kilometres in width, it covers a total area of 917 km². Discovered in 1976, the field was brought onstream in 1989 by the Iraq National Oil Company (INOC) at an initial production rate of 20,000 b/d. However, production ceased two years later during the First Gulf War. Operations resumed in 2004, albeit at a reduced rate of around 10,000 b/d, a level that persisted for more thana decade. According to Ministry of Oil data released in 2010, East Baghdad South holds 8.1 billion barrels of recoverable oil. Despite this sizeable resource base, production remained constrained for many years due to low reservoir pressure, complex geology, underinvestment, and the field's location in a densely populated area, which has restricted infrastructure expansion and drilling.
