The Gassi Touil fields comprise eight large wet gas fields (six commercial) located in the west of the Berkine Sub-Basin, in eastern Algeria. Seven of the fields were discovered in the 1960s and 1970s. Only Gassi Touil, Nezla and Hassi Touareg were brought onstream in Phase 1, between 1963 and 1975.Dry gas was initially piped to the giant Hassi Messaoud field for reinjection to support oil production, earning Gassi Touil the title 'the lungs of Hassi Messaoud'.
