Gbeibe is a large, sour, heavy oil field in northeast Syria. It was brought onstream in the late 1970s. In 2003, China National Oil and Gas Exploration and Development Corporation (CNODC), a subsidiary of CNPC, was awarded the development and production sharing agreement for the field. CNODC would be credited with incremental output produced above a determined baseline. Following the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, several oil fields in the area were seized by armed opposition groups. It is unclear how much damage has been done to the assets and infrastructure. We assume Gbeibe has not produced during this period.
