The Hawler Contract Area, located 30 kilometres west of Erbil, contains four oil discoveries: Demir Dagh, Zey Gawra, Banan and Ain Al Safra. Demir Dagh was discovered by Iraq's National Oil Company in 1960, but no further exploration work was carried out until 2012, after Oryx Petroleum (renamed Forza Petroleum in 2020) became the operator of the block. Zey Gawra and Ain Al Safra were discovered in 2013, followed by Banan in 2014.
