The Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) held its annual three-day conference in Jakarta, from 24-27 July 2023. The theme of IPA Convex 2023 was "Enabling Oil & Gas Investment and Energy Transition for Energy Security”. M&A and exploration were front and centre, with several deal and acreage award announcements. Regulatory improvements were high on the agenda as Indonesia continues its efforts to attract new investment, while establishing the foundations of its fledgling CCS/CCUS industry. We left the event with a sense of optimism. Several major developments have moved a step closer to FID, explorers are back, and investors have renewed appetite for Southeast Asia’s largest oil and gas producer. But have we been here before? With the 2024 general election looming, can Indonesia capitalise on renewed investor interest this time? Here are our top four takeaways from IPA 2023.
