The Karazhanbas heavy oil field is located in southwest Kazakhstan. It is operated by a JV of KazMunaiGas EP (KMG EP) and CITIC Resources (China). The field has been producing since 1980, with output currently at a plateau of slightly less than 40,000 b/d. EOR techniques are critical to development, alongside extensive drilling of low-productivity wells.In 2015, a 15-year contract extension was awarded until 2035.
