The Long Lake bitumen recovery and upgrading project is situated 40 kilometres southeast of Fort McMurray in the Athabasca oil sands region of northeastern Alberta. Long Lake is the fourth major integrated oil sands project in Canada, and it achieved first bitumen production in Q1 2008. Other integrated oil sands projects are developed through mining, but Long Lake was the first Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) project in Alberta to include on-site upgrading facilities.
