Naft Khana field is located in Diyala Governorate in northeastern Iraq, close to the Iranian border, and forms part of the Naft Shahr field, which extends across the Iraq-Iran border.. Discovered in 1923 by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (now BP) and brought into commercial production in 1927, it produces 41.5° API oil from the Miocene limestone of the Jeribe Formation. It is one of Iraq's oldest producing oil fields and was home to the country's first oil refinery and export pipeline infrastructure. Production peaked at around 25,000 b/d in the 1940s. However, output has since declined significantly due to war-related damage, security challenges, and prolonged underinvestment. Production dropped to approximately 2,000 b/d by 2024, and the field was shut down in 2025. In 2018, Naft Khana was awarded to Geo-Jade Petroleum under Iraq’s 5th Licensing Round, with a remuneration fee of 14.67%. A 34-year Exploration, Development, and Production Contract (EDPC) was finalised in 2023.
