The Norman Wells oil field is located in the Mackenzie Valley region, and is Canada's most northerly producing oil field. The field lies beneath the Mackenzie River.Commercial production from the field began in 1930, after a refinery was built in Norman Wells. Wells were drilled on the Bear and Goose Islands and the mainland. Crude production from the islands was shipped to shore by barge.
