Northeast region overview

The Northeast region currently leads the Lower 48 in natural gas output, though it faces infrastructure constraints compared to the Gulf Coast, which benefits from established proximity to expanding LNG export facilities and greater pipeline takeaway capacity. Production characteristics vary across the region's key areas: Northeast Marcellus operations focus primarily on dry gas extraction, while Southwest Marcellus and Utica developments are increasingly targeting liquids-rich opportunities that offer improved project economics through competitive breakeven thresholds. Despite leading national production volumes, the Northeast's full resource potential remains constrained by limited infrastructure connectivity to key export markets and processing facilities. We use our Lens dataset to outline key trends based on well level analysis and upstream asset valuations, including productivity, investment, value, geology, and activity.
