Permian E&Ps have been transitioning en masse from northern white sand to cheaper in-basin proppant. Cost savings of around US$600,000 per well have been a clear driver, but questions have still remained around the efficacy of in-basin sand. Are there risks that you essentially get what you pay for? In this report we examine the differences in half-cycle type well breakevens and NPV/boe between northern white and in-basin sand. We also benchmark companies and describe the leading and lagging adopters of in-basin sand. We combined Wood Mackenzie's Lens well data set with intelligence from our deep network of industry contacts to add new layers of understanding to this complex topic.
