The PY-1 gas field lies offshore south-east India in the Cauvery Basin, 18 kilometres from land. Although discovered in 1980 by ONGC, development was delayed because of the field's modest reserves. In 1995, the field was awarded to a consortium of Hindustan Oil Exploration Company (HOEC), Mosbacher and Tata Petrodyne but development work only started in 2007.
