Quiriquire was originally awarded in PDVSA's Second Round of Operating Service Agreements (OSAs, or Marginal Fields), which offered shut-in or low production fields to the industry for reactivation under the terms of a service contract. At the time of the award, minor amounts of heavy oil (12 - 16 °API) were being produced from the Quiriquire Shallow (Somero) oil field, which had been producing since 1928 and was extremely depleted.
