RasGas I is a fully integrated North Field LNG project. Qatargas operates the project on behalf of its shareholders - QatarEnergy (formerly Qatar Petroleum), ExxonMobil, Itochu, LNG Japan and KORAS (a consortium of South Korean companies). In 1993, the Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company Limited (RL) was founded to build a separate LNG plant, south of the existing Qatargas 1, facility.
