Block 44 (Shams contract area) is located in northwest Oman, approximately 250 kilometres west of Muscat. It is operated by local Omani company, ARA Petroleum, which assumed operatorship from PTTEP in late-2016. The block includes a number of small fields, including the Shams gas and condensate field, originally discovered in 1978. It was brought onstream in 2007. Previous operator PTTEP also made the Munhamir, Rawafid and Qamar discoveries. Munhamir commenced production in 2012.
