On 31 January 2017, Shell (60% interest and operator) announced the Whale discovery in western deepwater Gulf of Mexico, AC 772. The resource size was not disclosed, but net pay is an impressive 427 meters (1,400 ft). The well was spud on 7 February 2017 and reached total depth on 21 May 2017. At 6,995 m (22,948 ft) drill depth, the discovery well is significantly deeper than any of the wells serving the Perdido platform and one of the deepest in all of Alaminos Canyon. Shell is currently drilling an appraisal well in AC 728.
