The Sourdough field lies within the Point Thomson Unit, 24 kilometres (15 miles) inland from the North Slope coast and 80 kilometres (50 miles) to the east of Prudhoe Bay. Sourdough is the most easterly onshore discovery on the North Slope and sits beside the boundary of the Alaska National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR).
