South Sudan became independent from Sudan in 2011. As a result, Sudan ceded control of the Melut Basin Oil Project; the southern part of the Greater Nile Oil Project (GNOP) and the Block 5A development. These accounted for 70% of the country's commercial reserves and 80% of its production.
