The upstream sector in Tanzania is dominated by gas. Since 2010, large gas discoveries have been made in the deepwater. The BG Group (now Shell) and Ophir (now Medco Energi) joint venture made the first offshore gas discoveries on Block 4 in 2010. Since then, the partners on blocks 1 and 4 and the Equinor-led JV (previously Statoil) on Block 2 have discovered nearly 39 tcf of gas.
