Western Australia's gas market is changing. Supply is tight in the near term, and this is pushing up prices. But look forward a few years and the situation could change to surplus, based on a recent hot streak of gas discoveries in the onshore Perth Basin. The issue now is how to commercialise all this gas. We examine the WA domestic gas supply and demand outlook, and where potential new markets might emerge. Could further export opportunities open up via the resource-short North West Shelf LNG plant? We examine what will happen next in the Perth Basin, how much gas could be produced, and the commercial opportunities and bottle-necks. We also look at the emissions intensity and development costs of different WA domestic gas streams, and examine the impact that could be had in a world that is looking to decarbonise.
