The Urucu Area is a collection of oil, gas and condensate fields in a remote area within the Solimões basin. Exploiting the fields has always been highly challenging from a logistical point of view. The two biggest fields, Rio Urucu and Leste do Urucu, started producing in the late-80s and early-90s, respectively, with all of the other smaller fields coming onstream in the 2000s or later.Initially, all produced gas was flared due to the lack of a gas market.
