Despite being located between hydrocarbon-rich countries Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay does not produce any oil or gas. Periodic exploration, mainly onshore, has occurred over the decades, but no discoveries have been made. Uruguay is heavily dependent on hydrocarbon imports to meet its domestic energy requirements, a situation that may change.In 2022, the government launched the successful Open Uruguay round process and all offshore acreage in the country is actively being explored.
