The Xan field is by far the largest oil field in Guatemala and Central America. It was discovered in 1981 by Texaco in the northwest corner of the Petén basin but was not brought onstream until 1990 by Basic Resources. At first, production was modest due to the ongoing civil war. The peace accords signed in 1996 allowed for increased investment and a development drilling programme, which saw production grow to a peak of 24,000 b/d in 1998.
