2020 Wood Mackenzie Japan Gas Series

What does recovery look like?

23 - 25 June 2020

The coronavirus global pandemic and collapse in oil price has had a profound impact on today's gas market. As a result, supply and demand fundamentals are rapidly changing.

Pandemic-induced lockdowns have eroded gas demand, and economic uncertainty looms large. In 2020, global gas demand will contract by about 2% from 2019 levels. Meanwhile, producers globally are cutting capex in response to low prices for oil and gas, which means future supply growth is at risk. And the longer-run government responses remains to be seen – will policy makers defer energy transition targets to jumpstart economies or accelerate them to build on air quality improvements enjoyed during lockdown?

The Japan gas series will be organized around three themes:

Episode 1: Short term LNG market balancing
