European ethylene: where are we in the cycle?
Report summary
In 2017 we estimate that the Europe (EU15+Norway) regional steam crackers ran at a nameplate utilisation rate of 91%. If planned and unplanned outage activity is included, this utilisation rate rises to 95%. All in all, another very good year for the industry. Speed forward 5 years from now and we see the addition of around 900kt of additional ethylene capacity from INEOS, across the Grangemouth and Rafnes cracker debottlenecks. We also forecast that the Porto Marghera asset will permanently cease production at the end of 2022, around this point that INEOS introduces new supply. What will happen in between?
