High modulus/low shrink (HMLS) polyester is the major textile yarn used in global tyre reinforcement, currently at 668 kt. Every radial car tyre uses it as its fundamental textile reinforcement. HMLS polyester tyre yarns and fabrics offer a powerful technical package at extremely competitive prices and are the reference point against which the price and performance of other more specialist tyre yarns are measured and judged. Over the present decade (2010-2020) HMLS usage will have grown by an impressive 48% and will reach 851 kt in 2025. Final consumption of HMLS yarns and fabrics in developed countries is focusing on more specialist tyre production as commodity tyre build migrates to Asia. Supplying this tyre industry requires effective global partnerships. The dominance of the market leader, Hyosung, will be challenged as its key competitors accelerate investments and acquisitions to provide supply partnership options for the major global tyre producers.
